Hi,
Firstly, this is my first post on www.macosxhints.com. I have viewed several topics on this site in the past without posting or registering an account, but from this day forth, hope to contribute with a post here and there. Thanks! The setup: I have an apple airport express base station in my livingroom that is connected to our cable modem. From here, my roomate receives a wireless internet connection to his mac mini in his bedroom, and I receive a wireless internet connection to my powerbook G4 in my bedroom. There is a shared printer setup attached to the airport express in the livingroom. In my bedroom there is also an xbox 360 which is using the offical wireless network adaptor that is connected to the back of the xbox. The problem: In the xbox 360 dashboard, I use the wizard under network options to set up my wireless network connection from the xbox 360 to the airport express base station (note that both the airport express and xbox wireless network adaptor are 802.11g compatible). At first the xbox 360 detected our wireless network, but would not connect. That was the first problem. Silly me, I realized that I had to input or WEP password. After inputting the WEP, the xbox 360 can connect to our wireless network via airport express everytime. However, the next step in the wizard (find IP address) does not work. The xbox 360 is unable to find an IP address for the xbox 360 (note that is it set to detect IP automatically on the xbox 360). I have also tried inputting many other IP addresses manually with little luck. In summery: The xbox 360 can connect to our airport wireless network, but it cannot find an IP address for the xbox 360. THANKS for any help. I have been sitting here dying to get online with my xbox 360 but feel very frustrated and dissapointed with these problems. My last resort is trying to return the airport to bestbuy and exchange it for a different router. However, please make your responses directed to using an apple airport express base station as I would perfer to keep my airport express. THANKS! |

OK, it is me again.
After trying out a lot of stuff, I took the WEP off my wireless network. Now everything works fine. So now, has anyone figured out my setup WITH a WEP? Thanks |

Yes, as I said in the previous post... If you have a WEP, web encryption password, on your wireless network, you might want to try removing. That worked for me. All I did was use a closed network, so even though there is no password, the average user would not be able to connect to it.
Hope that helps. I've been online since and having fun. live gamertage= mamm0th1 |

Firstly, make sure you have the settings set to automatic for everything thing. Turn off your xbox then UNPLUG your modem/router. This will allow the routing tables and DHCP to reset in the router. Now, turn your router back on and then turn on your 360. If this does not work, run the troubleshooter in the dashboard and see how far it gets. If it still will not get an IP address, then you may have to enter in a static IP into the router and into your 360.

There are alot of possiblities, lets run through them all shall we:
First, depending on what type of router you have and what capabilities it is limited to you can manually go into your router and give your router a static ip address as opposed to a dynamic ip address that is assigned by your isp.You will need to contact your routers support in order to do this, they will provide you with a static ip address. Afterwards you can go into the xbox dash into-net settings-and setup this ip manually instead of auto. They also will probably provide you with a static dns and an alternate dns which is right below the ip info and you must do the same MANUALLY. Next, if you are using a wireless connection, you must again go to net setting-edit settings-type in your network name(ssid)- your wep or wpa encryption code(I recommend wpa)then test connection. Afterwards you can go back into your routers settings and change the type of wireless mode(a,b,g,or n)or in some cases like my router you can use a mixed mode. My router which is a d-link dgl-4500 has many different mixed modes. For example it has a b,g and n mode. It also has an A and N mode which I do use because the only adapter compatible with the 360 is the one xbox sells which is an A frequency mode. So if your router offers an A mode I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU USE IT only because you wont get any interference with household appliances such as microwave that can interfere with you signal. Second:after you do all of that you can again manually go into your router and type in your xbox's mac address. You can find this out by going into the dash-net settings-edit settings-on the top it has 2 options basic and additional setting go to additional settings-advanced settings-hit A-wirless info and it will give you its mac address. Type it into your router and it should recognize it.Also you SHOULD while you are still logged onto your router open up the ports for xbox live, they are as follows; tcp 3074,udp 3074,and udp 88 three in all. If and when you do this it will give you optimal gaming with no lag because they are the specific ports xbox live predominately uses. Your routers support should be able to guide you through the steps. If you happen to have dsl you will need to go into the xbox dash to net set-edit set-additional set-and go to ppeo settings and type in your name and password provided by someone such as Verizon. Make sure whatever configurations you do to the xbox you go and do the same in the router. Also make sure you NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER,use NO SECURITY OR LEAVE YOUR ROUTER UNSECURED because then anyone can jump on your network and slow oyur connection down but more importantly hack into it! With all of that said you should be able to log into xbox live with no problem. If not your third option is to go to BEST BUY and purchase what is called an ethernet av powerline adapter. Almost every company makes one. I suggest a linksys model #plk200.Netgear and D-link also make them but the linksys is the easiest to configure with your router unless you have of course a netgear or d-link router then you should always use the same. Its pretty easy to use,it acts like a wireless conection. You plug one into a wall socket near your router via ethernet cable. Then you plug the other into your xbox via ethernet cable and the devices should recognize eachother. These also come with a mac address so again I suggest putting these settings into your router so you dont run into any problems down the line. Finally if all of this fails, which I dont foresee happening you should get a router that is compatible with xbox 360. You can go to www.xboxlive.com to see what models are compatible. If this is the case I suggest the linksys wrt54g,or the d-link dgl-4300 which is a GAMING ROUTER. The linksys wrt55ag is also very good because it uses an A wireless frequency which is IDEAL FOR GAMING. Any other questions ill be happy to answer because Im pretty much a computer nerd genius, just kidding about the nerd part the genius part is pretty much dead-on. |

Update your xbox 360 and have your airport extreme password ready. Plug in the xbox wireless adapter. Go to the xbox and set it up. No problem. Connect 360 workd great too . |
