I'd really like to have a "New Text File" option when I right/option click in a finder window. I'm forever wanting to create a simple text file containing notes or an installation key without having to start up notes and then do a save as and navigate all over my hard drive to find the right directory when I already have the directory view open in finder right in front of me. Maybe there is already an elegant solution to my problem, but I don't know what it is. Any suggestions other than adding a "New Text File" option to the pop up window in finder?

Are you running 10.4? If so you can add an Automator action that will do what you want. It will show up in the pop up (called a Contextual Menu) under the Automator submenu.

There's an tiny little system pref application called 'NuFile' that add a "new file" option to the context menu, you can add whatever type of file you like. It's pretty neat. You can create new files of whatever you like, and even have the related application open as soon as the file is created if you like.

I know it should be built into the OS but sadly it isn't.
