Wink How does one rip VCD's?

My nephew is getting crazy about ripping (unencrypting) VCDs. I have and can use MacTheRipper for DVD's. I know it is illegal (barely legal), but I have a second house in the country and cannot buy 2 copies of the same disks. In any case I do not know one thing about VCD's, let alone ripping them. Anybody can help (my teen nephew)? Many TIA

Considering a stand alone dvd player for your TV that will play VCDs natively costs around or even under 50 dollars, I would suggest you just get one of those and then clone all of your VCDs to take with you.

By the way, what you are doing is creating an offsite archive of your VCDs, just incase the site you are at now has some sort of disaster. All of that is totally legal.

Mmm... I do not own 1 single VCD (many DVDs). I am really trying to help my nephew with his darn VCDs. And I own 4 stand alone dvd players (and 1 recorder + 3 burners) which can read everything. But what does it mean "clone all of your VCDs"? How do I do that if they are crypted? Excuse my dumbness...

Extract MPEG files

You can get the raw MPEG files of easily enough.
Pop the cd into a computer open up the cd. Navagate to the MPEGAV folder. You should see something like AVSEQ01.DAT

If you rename that to an AVSEQ01.mpg it should play in mplayer / VLC.

There are burning applications that will clone one cd to another, it is basically a disc to disc exact copy, sector by sector.

I know that roxio software has a copy cd function in it, but I will be honest with you. I do like 99% of my imaging, disc burning, etc on PCs. The only time I really ever burn stuff to disc off a mac is for either back ups, or applications I need in the field for my job. I did a quick search for burning apps out there, check this link out and maybe it will point you in the right direction

Aaah, many thanks. And then can I burn the .mpg file on a new VCD with Toast or a similar software?

This is for rmiller021, obviously.

And m any thanks also to tlarkin. I am an old registered visitor of VersionTracker, but could not find anything for this problem

Note that the following makes the assumption that you are a United States resident. (I didn't see any location info in your profile.)

Well, it's not "barely legal" in the States, it's actually illegal. Breaking the encryption on a DVD with DeCSS (which MacTheRipper uses) is a violation of the DMCA. It doesn't sound like USC Title 17 covers your DVD ripping here if you just don't want to buy a second copy for home viewing.

Just wanted to make sure this was in the thread.

I would think with a VCD you could just do a disk copy with Disk Utility or even Toast. But like baburkhan, I do not own any VCD's to try this out.
It's all just DVD's.

Not trying to be a wet blanket. I just wanted to make sure it was in the thread so it didn't look like a big piracy festival here in the forums.

Too biblical. Medieval Europe knew what punishment was - Wheeling, the Rack, Iron Maiden, Juda's Cradle, Impaling.......

Unfortunately, this is true even if the encrypted disc does not contain copyrighted material.

But VCDs aren't actually encrypted, so as long as the material on them is either uncopyrighted or your copy would otherwise be allowable under Fair Use doctrine, you have nothing to worry about.

Yes. I did not mean to imply otherwise with my post.

I'm having trouble copying VCD's - I want to get them converted to H.264 to put on my Apple TV. Whilst some work, others give errors when I try to copy the DAT file or if I use Mpeg streamclip on the disc itself I get errors too.

Is it possible that some VCD's do have copy protection?
