I am having a difficulty connecting to a printer on my Windows Vista Ultimate computer from Mac OS X 10.3.
The printer is a Canon PIXMA iP1500, I am running Windows Vista Ultimate on my PC, and Mac OS X 10.3.9 on my iMac. When I attempt to connect to the shared printer through System Preferences>Print and Fax>Printer List, it asks for my username and password (as it should). I enter the correct information, but I recieve the error message " Unable to connect to server with the provided password and user name. Error: 256 " I can connect to the shared printer with Windows XP SP2 and I can connect to file shares on Vista from the Mac (with the exact same username and password). The printer is connected to the Vista PC by USB, is shared in Network and Sharing Center, over a BT Home Hub wireless/Ethernet network. I would appreciate any assistance. |

I get exactly the same problem. I've tried everything and can't find any way to get round this.
I've tried the advanced settings in the Print Centre (hold down option whilst selecting More Printers) and then tried adding my printer to my mac as through samba using 101 variations on smb://username assword@mypc/myprinter and everytime I get NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL. My username / password are corrrect so it seems to me that the printer share name is wrong, but according to vista it is correct.SOOOOOO annoying... HELP! Ross |

I dont mean to resurrect an older thread, but has anyone found a solution to this?
I just bought a Macbook and I am trying to connect to a printer shared by my Vista desktop computer, but I get the same error as the OP. |

Have you tried printing via LPR/LPD?
I had similar problem getting my mother-inlaw's MacBook printing to my father-inlaw's new Vista PC.
On the Vista PC 1. From Windows Vista Control Panel 2. Select "Programs and Features" pane 3. Click "Turn Windows Features on or off" 4. Turn on the LPD protocol. 5. Ensure printer(s) are shared On the Mac 1. Start Applications/Utilities/Printer Setup Utility 2. Hold down the "Option" key and click the "More Printers" button 3. From the top menu select "Advanced" 4. From the "Device:" field select "LPD/LPR Host or Printer" 5. In the "Device URL:" lpd://VistaPCName/PrinterShareName 6. Click the "Add" button regards, Michael |

I've been having similar problem (I won't go into it)
but one thing that I'm worried by is the login panel that you guys have mentioned. I spent ages trying different variations of my username and password but then, and this is where i got worried, I tried no username, no password. I was suddenly logged in! Erm, is it just me, or when Bill was heading that team to patch up security in windows, that seems like a major something he missed??? |

Since I found part of this info useful in getting my HP PSC 2175xi printing from OSX 10.4 to a Vista machine I figured I would share my expeience.
Instead of using this for address: lpd://VistaPCName/PrinterShareName I used this: lpd://ipofhostpc/printersharename Worked great for me... |

I'm having a couple of problems with this. First, I don't have a "Printer Setup Utility under Applications/Utilities (I'm on OS 10.5.2). When I go to the regular Print & Fax under System Preferences, and click "+" to add a new printer, I try holding Option and clicking More Printers, but I don't get an "Advanced" option in the dropdown that appears (only "Canon IJ Network", "EPSON FireWire", "EPSON TCP/IP", and "HP IP Printing". Any suggestions? |

Printer Setup Utility is now rolled into Print & Fax prefs. Add the Advanced access button to Print & Fax:

I am running OS 10.5.6 and was still having issues after trying everything above. After spending way too much time I finally got it to work by doing the following:
1.) Add the advanced tab in the printer utility as described in above post 2.) In "type" box, select Windows 3.) In "URL" box, type smb://VistaPCName/PrinterShareName 4.) In "Location" box, type lpd://VistaPCName/PrinterShareName 5.) Select your printer from listing in "Print Using" drop down box 6.) Click "Add" Button If this helps someone else, maybe the time I spent will have a little more value. |

When I set up the lpd printer on the Mac, my printer (HP PSC 2410) isn't available in the list, and the generic postscript driver doesn't seem to work...
Thanks... |

Your printer isn't a postscript printer... You need a CUPS driver to use the OS X standard network protocols (Windows Printing and IP printing), which are provided by CUPS. Some of the printers above are supported by Gutenprint/Gimp-Print, which are CUPS drivers included by Apple. For your model, you need hpijs (3 parts): http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx |

I apologize in advance for rehashing this thread however I just recently purchased my first mac (longtime pc user) and was having the hardest time getting my new mac to print to my vista pc printer on my home network. I tried everything listed until I found this which ultimately fixed the problem
