Having trouble connecting to Internet with Virtual PC 7.0.2

Computer & Operating System: I'm using a Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.8 (G5)
My Internet-Connection Problem: I haven't been able to connect to the internet with Virtual PC for Mac 7.0.2. (I have to use Airport to connect to a router; That's the only way I connect to the internet with my Mac OSX)
Request: Please tell me whatever I need to do in order to get Virtual PC 7.0.2 connect to my Local Area Network with my Airport.
Questions:1. Would any of you give me very detailed instructions so I can learn how I can get connected with that virtual machine/OS and Install the Virtual PC "Update Additions"?

Advice I've already gotten about this issue:

Quote:
Yes, but you have to use the virtual switch setting in vpc and manually configure XP for IP etc

I don't know how to configure "XP for PC".

Quote:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.

Note If you are using Windows XP, click Switch to Classic View to see the standard icons and double-click Network Connections.
2. Right-click or Control-click the Local Area Connection icon, and then click Properties.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the list, and then click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Properties, and then click Obtain an IP address automatically.

When I finished Step 1 I got the following window/screen (shown below). If that's not "Classic View" would you please tell me how to switch my Virtual PC 7.0.2 to Classic View so I can find that Local Area Connection icon, which you mention in Step #2?

Here's the window/screen I have on my monitor now:

Here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/23948771...et_drivers.zip

just install in XP and VPC will do its job

Those files (within that zip.) did not help me because I have a PPC, and I don't have a Built-In Ethernet. Like I mentioned: I use Airport to connect to a local area network (LAN).

Quote:
VPC shares its connection with your Mac, so you don't need all these steps.
just make sure you have a (virtual) network adapter installed in your windows machine, and it should work out of the box.

I don't know exactly where that "virtual network adapter" is.

I'd appreciate any help (and very detailed instructions). Only a 1 moderator has really given me detailed instructions, but I need a little more help with this problem.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

You do it within VPC, not Windows. See VPC preferences.

Would any of you please tell me what I should do after that?

I've already selected "Virtual Switch", but that probably won't work since I'm using "Airport" to connect to a router in my local area network. Like I mentioned before: I need to have detailed instructions so I can properly configure my virtual machine so it can connect to the same router as my Mac OSX Tiger is using now.

Please give me detailed instructions.

I haven't got VPC installed nor have I used it in a long while but I think I can answer some of your questions.

To install the Virtual Additions, you have to go to the menu bar and select it in the menu (sorry that I can't be more specific) it's one of the options near the middle. You'll need your VPC install disc so that it can fully install all the files.

You've already gone past the "Classic View" bit, as you're already in Network Connections, however you don't have any Local Area Networks. This means you don't have any ethernet drivers installed, which is where that rapidshare link comes in I presume.

Those steps also don't really do anything as those are the default options anyway so you can skip this.

As a side note, you might want to try these steps I wrote some time ago (when you've installed ethernet drivers) as they contain screen shots:

1) Go to Control Panel and double click Network Connections.

2) Right click Local Area Connection and select Properties.

3) In the General tab select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.

4) Select Obtain an IP address automatically and also make sure Obtain DNS server address automatically is also selected.

5) Click OK on this window and OK on the one below.

Don't mistake the name of the file as meaning you have a Intel Mac, Virtual PC only works ok PPC anyway so whoever linked you the file should have known this.

Extract the zip (inside VPC/XP) and right click on the net21x4.inf file and select Install. That should install the drivers.

If the drivers don't install: - if you don't get any of these steps then just ignore them as they may not apply to you.

Right Click on My Computer and select Properties. Select the Hardware tab then click on the Device Manager button.

(Another method of getting to Device Manager is to click on the Start menu in bottom left hand corner, click Run then type devmgmt.msc and OK).

You should see Network Adapters a little way down, it should/might have a yellow exclaimation mark over the icon symbolising that there's something wrong with the device (in this case the drivers aren't installed).

Double click on the network adapter which has a fault/yellow icon, click on the Driver tab and then the Update Driver button.

In the Hardware Update Wizard:
- Select No, not this time and then press Next.
- Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and press Next.
- Check the Include this location in the search and click on Browse.
- Select the folder where you extracted the drivers to and click Next.

It should install the drivers for your network card, from then you can follow the above steps to configure the IP address to be automatically assigned (which it should be doing by default anyway).

I don't know exactly where that "virtual network adapter" is.

The virtual adapter is basically a fake (software) network/ethernet card to fool Windows. You need to have one installed so that VPC/Windows can use your Mac's network settings to go online.

Thanks "Melon". I appreciate your help. I have 2 more minor problems, and I have 1 new screenshot for anyone who would be willing helped me a little more or just as much as you've helped me.

1. I haven't found that particular local area network file, in which you took a screenshot of:

As soon as I opened Virtual PC 7.0.2 I got this pop-up message:

No idea about that I'm afraid, don't think I've ever run into that problem. There's an old unanswered thread on these forums about that same problem here. Though with a little more searching, there's some answers on this page: http://www.aspdeveloper.net/Virtual_...e_started.aspx

Specifically:
Quote:
Currently, the primary reason for, this error is due to not having Virtual
PC updated to the latest version while attempting to use it in the Tiger
version of Mac OS X, 10.4.x.

All you need to do is shutdown Virtual PC fully. Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/mac on the Mac side and choose Downloads -> Virtual
PC for Mac Version 7.0.2 update.

Once the update is downloaded complete the installation of it and the issue
you are having will go away.

At this point you can then go into PC -> PC Settings -> Networking -> and
set it to Virtual Switch.

Your issue should be fully resolved at this point.

Quote:
I tried this and it worked for me.

I started the installation for virtual pc 7.
when it restarted and the errors came up and went ahead and fixed them.
when the message came up to call microsoft, I closed message and ran the 7.0.2 upgrade.
when the upgrade finished...all was good in the world.

hope this helps.

Except of course you say you're already on 7.0.2 so maybe your VPC install is bad?

"Melon", thanks for all of your help. I will continue to follow the steps you gave to me.

Sorry for the bad grammar in my previous message (withing this forum-thread). I meant to type: "I would appreciate anyone who would be willing help me a little more or just as much as you've helped me."

Thanks for reading all of the issues (above), I know it's not fun to work through all of this and still come up with errors.

Were you using a real PC (instead of Virtual PC) to get all of those screenshots you shared with me? If any of you would, please send screenshots of virtual PC.

No problem, I remember first using VPC and it was hard to set up and get it working. Even then it was just so so so slow which is why I don't use it anymore.

As the warning says, "Virtual PC for Mac will run without Virtual Switch networking." I have to click OK in that dialog every time I start up VPC, but since I am not using Virtual Switch, it doesn't stop Shared Networking from working.

I don't use Virtual Switch because it assumes a lot of manual configuration, where Shared Networking is simple and automatic with the defaults. Virtual Switch is only for use if you can name the reason why you are using it. That is, specialized network requirements from an application inside Virtual PC. That doesn't apply to most people.
