Question release/renew IP from terminal

greetings...

does anyone know how to release and renew a DHCP-issued IP address from the Terminal?

I can do it in the Network prefs panel by switching over to manual config and back to DHCP but I seek a more elegant solution along the lines of (gasp!) the 'IPCONFIG /RELEASE_ALL' command in DOS for a quick easy fix.

any help is appreciated
